Guide · self-employed & LLC · not insurance
CrowdHealth for self-employed owners: the short guide
If you run an LLC or freelancing shop and your premium feels like a second rent payment, here is the short version. CrowdHealth is medical crowdfunding plus advocacy help. It is not insurance. Our household left BCBS around ~$1,800/mo for CrowdHealth around ~$700/mo (personal anecdote, not a quote).
Who this page is for
Founders, freelancers, and LLC owners (often under 55) who are staring at four-figure premiums, refuse a statement of faith, and will accept crowdfunding risk for a large monthly cut. If you need guaranteed claims or MEC, start at CrowdHealth vs ACA and stay on insurance.

How the model works (high level)
- Pay the monthly advocacy fee + crowdfunding ask.
- Shop care as self-pay; advocacy may help negotiate cash rates.
- For eligible events, you pay the member commitment first; then members may crowdfund the rest of eligible expenses.
- Funding is voluntary. Strong company-reported track record ≠ a legal guarantee.

Maternity (read before romanticizing any family story)
Eligible maternity is a single Global Pregnancy event with a $3,000 member commitment. If expected delivery is < 300 days after the mother’s membership start, maternity is not eligible for crowdfunding. Newborn standard care is a separate event. Never treat CrowdHealth as drop-in pregnancy insurance. Story context: Our story.
Who should skip CrowdHealth
- You need a contractual payment obligation. Stay on ACA or traditional insurance.
- Tobacco, weight, or age gates fail. Check the current FAQ (tobacco history, 220 lb female / 260 lb male, membership ends at 65).
- Heavy near-term pre-existing needs. Related crowdfunding is usually closed in years 1-2; year 3+ has a related cap.
- You need MEC in a mandate state. Membership does not satisfy MEC (CA, DC, MA, NJ, RI, VT named; verify your state).
- You need HSA-fundable premiums. The membership fee is not HSA-fundable per FAQ framing.
- Expected delivery is under 300 days after mom joins. Maternity crowdfunding is not eligible in that window.
