CrowdHealth review: what our household actually did
I’m Justin Wise. We left a bare-bones BCBS plan around ~$1,800/mo for CrowdHealth around ~$700/mo. Those are our household numbers, labeled as a personal anecdote. Not a quote. Not a savings promise. I’m a member, and this review stays honest about who should skip it.
Who this page is for
Self-employed / LLC operators who want a lived-experience review with compliance honesty. not a hype thread. For pure cost tables, use CrowdHealth cost. For the BCBS switch narrative, also see Leaving BCBS for CrowdHealth.
The short version
Why we looked
Unsubsidized premium shock. Bare-bones BCBS still crushed cash flow.
What we wanted
Lower monthly outflow + no statement of faith.
What we did not want
To pretend crowdfunding equals a contractual claim.
What we joined
CrowdHealth standard path as a family. secular crowdfunding + advocacy.
Our household figure
~$700/mo (anecdote). Company avg individual <55 ≈ $142/mo.
Not a quote
Your ages, size, and crowdfunding ask will differ. Verify live.
Would I recommend blindly?
No. I send people away when gates fail.
Good fit when
Healthy-enough, tobacco-free, weight-eligible, OK with self-pay risk.
Bad fit when
Need MEC, guarantees, near-term pre-ex crowdfunding, or <300-day maternity.
What CrowdHealth is (and is not)

Maternity caveat (Kerry / pregnancy context)
Our family story includes pregnancy context. Eligible maternity = Global Pregnancy event, $3,000 member commitment. If expected delivery is < 300 days after mother’s start → maternity not eligible for crowdfunding. Newborn care is a separate event. Do not treat CrowdHealth as pregnancy insurance. Referral honesty
This site uses my member referral code JUSTIN. If you join via my link and stay 3+ months, I may earn a member referral reward (publicly described as $250 per new primary). That does not change the product risks. Details in the footer and on CrowdHealth’s referral page.
Who should skip CrowdHealth
- You need a contractual payment obligation. Stay on ACA or traditional insurance.
- Tobacco, weight, or age gates fail. Check the current FAQ (tobacco history, 220 lb female / 260 lb male, membership ends at 65).
- Heavy near-term pre-existing needs. Related crowdfunding is usually closed in years 1-2; year 3+ has a related cap.
- You need MEC in a mandate state. Membership does not satisfy MEC (CA, DC, MA, NJ, RI, VT named; verify your state).
- You need HSA-fundable premiums. The membership fee is not HSA-fundable per FAQ framing.
- Expected delivery is under 300 days after mom joins. Maternity crowdfunding is not eligible in that window.

What we left out on purpose
- Any invented “funding success rate” or audit claim we cannot cite from CrowdHealth’s public pages.
- Personalized quotes, underwriting outcomes, or tax advice.
- Calling CrowdHealth insurance, MEC, a ministry, or a guaranteed payment product.
- State-by-state mandate encyclopedias (deferred until law verify). We name CA, DC, MA, NJ, RI, VT and say verify your state.
- Justin’s household ~$1,800 → ~$700 numbers as anything other than a labeled personal anecdote.
