How CrowdHealth works (and how it differs from insurance)

Updated · Figures from CrowdHealth public FAQ / How It Works. If a number is missing, we could not cite it.

You pay a monthly advocacy fee, help crowdfund other members, and put up a member commitment on eligible events. Then other members may crowdfund the rest. That is the model. It is not insurance, and funding is not legally guaranteed.

Who this page is for

Self-employed shoppers who want the money flow explained without marketing fluff. If you already know the model and want cost math, go to CrowdHealth cost.

One line up front: if you need a contractual claim obligation, keep insurance.

The short version

Three money pieces

Advocacy fee ($60/member/mo) + variable crowdfunding ask (capped) + per-event member commitment ($500 / $3,000 maternity).

How care is bought

You present as self-pay / uninsured. Advocacy may help negotiate. Eligible bills may be crowdfunded after your commitment.

What is not true

Not insurance. Not a ministry. Not MEC. Not a legal payment guarantee. Not HSA-fundable membership.

The three money pieces

  1. Advocacy fee. $60 per member / month. Tools, Care Advocates, negotiation, virtual care perks (per public materials).
  2. Variable crowdfunding ask. Caps: ages 0-54 up to $140; 55-64 up to $280; family of 4+ up to $420. Company-reported average individual under 55 ≈ $142/mo total.
  3. Member commitment. $500 per eligible health event first ($3,000 eligible global pregnancy), then the crowd may fund the rest of eligible expenses. Company says no max per eligible event on the standard path.
